La Jolla Playhouse
Claudia Shear and Lisa Peterson discuss THE RECIPE

A Recipe for Self-Discovery

A moment with the show's playwright and director:
Julia Child before she was a household name
Before Julia Child evolved into a cultural icon, she spent years figuring out who she was and what she could contribute to the world — and that’s where The Recipe begins.

In this exclusive video, two-time Tony Award-nominated playwright Claudia Shear and two-time Obie Award-winning director Lisa Peterson reflect on Julia in her early, undocumented years as she was discovering the woman she would become before the fame, the cameras and The French Chef, the groundbreaking television series that made her a star.

Their insights offer just a taste of what audiences can expect from this highly anticipated world premiere, kicking off in two weeks on February 10, with early performances already sold out or extremely limited.

About The Recipe: A funny, colorful, and delicious new play about the early life of the endlessly fascinating Julia Child. Featuring Broadway veteran Christina Kirk as Julia and two-time Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz as her true love, Paul Child, the play follows young Julia as she careens from Pasadena to New York, Washington, D.C., Ceylon, and finally to Paris’s famed Cordon Bleu cooking school – where she faces long odds, too-short sleeves, and her own self-doubt before discovering her true calling.
